was halfway through my coffee when the stuttering started and i almost spilled the whole mug laughing. like who even writes a character that kills aquarium fish out of pure spite and makes it the funniest thing in the room. kevin kline just waltzes in as this american idiot who's convinced he's a genius and every single time he opens his mouth the whole plot tilts sideways. i kept waiting for it to get mean in that modern way but it never does. it's mean the old way. the pure mean. personal grudges and greed and accents you want to bottle. four people plan a diamond job in london. otto the muscle, wanda the brains and legs, ken the animal lover who can barely get a sentence out, and then john cleese as the uptight barrister who somehow gets sucked into the whole mess because wanda decides seduction is faster than a crowbar. that's it. that's the setup. then they all immediately try to screw each other and you spend the next two hours watching the lies bounce around like a pinball made of pure british embarrassment. cleese does this thing where his whole body is still a barrister even when he's naked in somebody's flat or screaming about how he wants to be free. the posture never leaves him. jamie lee curtis is sharp and mercenary without ever turning into a cartoon. she knows exactly when to drop the accent and when to keep it. michael palin as ken is the secret weapon. the man can turn a speech impediment and a love of animals into pure chaos. every time otto stomps another fish you feel it in your gut and then you laugh anyway because the movie refuses to let you feel sorry for anyone for longer than three seconds. the double-crosses stack so high you stop keeping score. diamonds get buried. passwords get mangled. people get run over by steamrollers in the most casual way possible. there's a scene with fries and ketchup that somehow becomes a full psychological breakdown and i still don't know how they pulled it off. the whole thing moves like a farce that somehow remembered to stay human. nobody lectures. nobody stops to explain why greed is bad. they just keep grabbing for the loot and tripping over their own schemes. i rewatched it last night after years and it still feels like it was made by people who actually hated each other a little bit and decided to put that energy on camera. the banter between kline and cleese is nuclear. otto keeps calling people assholes in this completely sincere american way and archie just absorbs it like a man whose entire education has failed him. there's no soft landing. when somebody gets hurt they stay hurt. when the plan collapses it collapses in public with witnesses and wet shoes. the physical comedy still lands hard. that bit with the dog and the chips. the airport scramble. the moment ken finally gets his revenge and it's so specific and so petty that you cheer even while you're wincing. nobody is safe. the posh people get mocked. the loud americans get mocked. the gentle stutterer gets driven to actual murder and somehow remains the most likeable person in the frame. that's the trick. everybody is terrible and somehow you root for all of them at once. what surprised me is how clean the construction is. every setup pays off. the fish aren't just a gag, they become the moral scoreboard. the italian phrases get mangled into weapons. the safe deposit key travels through so many hands you start suspecting the furniture. john cleese wrote this and you can feel the monty python DNA without any of the sketches slowing it down. it's a proper story that just happens to be stuffed with people who cannot stop embarrassing themselves. i sat there thinking about modern versions of this and how they would sand every edge off. somebody would have to learn a lesson about teamwork. somebody would apologize. somebody would discover their true self. none of that happens here. they steal. they lie. they fall in love for approximately forty-five minutes because it's useful. then they keep lying. the ending is messy and perfect and refuses to tidy up the moral ledgers. some people win. some people lose teeth. the diamonds go where the diamonds go. the accents alone are worth the price. kline doing that fake intellectual american trying to speak european philosophy while threatening to break fingers. cleese slipping into pure upper-class panic. palin fighting his own mouth every single scene. curtis switching between sultry and pure calculation so fast you almost miss the joins. nobody is doing prestige acting. everybody is doing exact-right-for-this-movie acting. if you want a heist that feels like four raccoons in a trash can fighting over the same shiny object while speaking in complete sentences, this is it. no speeches about the system. no chosen one. just greed, lust, revenge, and one very unlucky tank of fish. i laughed until my side hurt and then i laughed at the fact that i was laughing at a man getting crushed by industrial equipment. the movie doesn't care if that makes me a bad person. it just keeps going. still holds up. still vicious. still the kind of comedy that treats the audience like adults who can handle a little cruelty with their jokes. watched it twice in a row because the second time you catch all the tiny setups you missed while you were busy howling. that's the real flex. it rewards the rewatch without ever winking at you. just pure chaotic craft from people who knew exactly how far they could push a stutter joke and a steamroller before it stopped being funny. spoiler: they never stopped.

Woke labels

Members can file a published criterion and itemized evidence. Other members +1 or −1 that reason — once. If 10% of members who weighed in file a label, and a reason reaches net +5, that rank keeps the title omitted from the database. Weak labels do not.
