In 1960, a lone survivor of a plane crash named Jack discovers an abandoned underwater utopia, only to find out that the mystery behind its creation is much more sinister than he first believed.

The year is 1960, while flying over the Atlantic ocean, average citizen Jack blacks out and awakens to discover that he is the sole survivor of a plane crash. Amidst the wreckage of his plane Jack spots and swims to a lighthouse and boards a Bathysphere that takes him deep within the ocean and into Rapture. Originally conceived as a utopia where a man would be entitled to all that he made without the interference of "parasites" by idealistic billionaire mogul Andrew Ryan. Rapture has since decayed and festered from the infectious effects of civil war and anarchy, brought about by the very ideals it citizens and it's leader embrace.

Aided by a sympathetic smuggler and a rogue geneticist, Jack salvages gene altering chemicals transforming himself into a superhuman, and uses his newfound powers and abilities as well as an arsenal of weapons to fend off the vicious hordes of psychotic mutants, security robots and armored supersoldiers that resulted from Rapture's unrest while given the choice to either rescue or lethally harvest the genetic material from Rapture's only citizens with a chance: the 10 year old "Little Sisters". As Jack wanders through the condemning atmosphere of rapture, he treads towards a secret that could shatter all that he has known forever.

so im sitting here still hearing that damn bathysphere click and the water pressing on the glass like it wants in, and i havent even booted the thing in a week. you drop into rapture cold, plane wreck, lighthouse, that big brass ball going down, and the first thing that hits you is not a gunfight its the posters. ryan this, ryan that, art deco curves and pipes sweating rust, some lady singing on a radio like the world didnt already end. i kept walking past the same smashed mannequin three times because the light made it look like it moved. thats the game. it doesnt need to yell at you. the place does the yelling by just existing half dead. the combat is dumb in the best way. you get a wrench, you get a revolver that feels like it was pulled out of a junk drawer, then plasmids start rewriting your blood so you can light guys on fire or yank them around with telekinesis like youre bored of normal physics. splicing yourself into a monster while the city falls apart is the whole joke and it lands every time. big daddies are loud and heavy and i still flinch when one stomps around a corner even though i know the pattern. little sisters are the moral mess in the middle, you can snatch their ADAM or spare them and the game doesnt put a big neon arrow on which choice makes you a good person, it just lets the leftover kids and the ending do the talking later. i rescued most of them first run because i got soft hearing the whispering, second run i went full harvest just to see the other side and it felt greasy which is probably the point. andrew ryan is a whole lecture you can ignore if you want but the audio diaries make it impossible. objectivist paradise under the sea, no parasites, free markets for gene splicing and every vice you can invent, and then the place tears itself open because people are still people. the twist with your own free will is the gut punch everyone remembers and it still works even when you know its coming because the game sold you the loop so hard you didnt notice the strings. would you kindly. yeah. that line alone is why half the shooters after this tried to be clever and mostly failed. exploration is the real drug. you can burn hours just poking at rooms, listening to old records, reading notes about some scientist who cracked and some dancer who didnt. the sound design is filthy in a good way, water dripping, distant gunfire, splicers muttering nonsense about butterflies or their dead kids. when the lights cut and a security bot starts spinning up you feel it in the chair. combat gets frantic once you have a full kit, ice one guy then shock the water then shotgun the other while a turret you hacked covers your back. it isnt perfect modern control, aiming can be a little floaty and the hacking mini game is basically pipe dream with a timer, but it never got in the way of the fantasy for me. some ports crash like crazy around the later bathyspheres and vending machines, i had to save spam like a maniac on one playthrough, so if youre on that version just know the save button is your friend. it looks its age in places, textures are soft, characters move stiff, but the art direction holds so hard it doesnt matter. that 1960 underwater glam rotting from the inside is still the best city design i can name. you feel the ambition and the collapse at the same time. players still call it art and theyre not wrong, not in a pretentious way, just because every corridor and every poster is doing work. no filler cutscenes telling you how to feel. the game trusts you to wander and get haunted. i keep coming back when i want a shooter that remembers atmosphere is a weapon. most modern stuff is louder and cleaner and somehow emptier. this one is grimy and opinionated and still fun twenty years later. if you bounced off the graphics once, try again with the lights down and headphones on. rapture will get under your skin whether you want it or not. just dont expect it to hold your hand. it will hold a wrench to your head instead and ask if youre still free. crazy that a game this old can still do that. i finished it last night and sat there staring at the menu like an idiot. yeah. play it.

Where do I start with this masterpiece? As soon as the first scene rolls in, you know you're in for an action-packed, deeply atmospheric, intelligent gaming experience! To start off with - the Graphics. Truly breathtaking! The plane crash at the beginning wouldn't be as intense if it wasn't for the immersive fire and water effects. The lighting effects are also fantastic, shining through and on the surface. The graphics are the best I've seen in any game. Next - the Gameplay. The gameplay was solid, with character customisations to the roof! The splicing is excellent, and the combat system works effectively! My only criticism is the lack of a 'block' button. Like Condemned. That would have been excellent, as it is very difficult to survive on Hard mode. Next - the Story. It..is...remarkable! From the moment it begins, your trapped; spiralling into the world of Bioshock! Packed with twists and turns, this is one of the best stories ever created for a game! Or movie for that matter. And incredible, intelligent plot form start to finish. Next - the Sound. Without the implausible sound effects and the captivating music, the astounding atmosphere would be inconceivable! The soundtrack is unlike any other. 'Nuff said! And finally - the Atmosphere. Beyond words. Seriously, I cannot describe it. You actually feel like you are in Rapture, fearing for your life and fearful of the Splicing mutants that roam the abandoned halls of Rapture. The Big Daddy's are terrifying, and their connection with the Little Sisters is strong! They would lay down their life for them, which is unique to see something so massive protecting a tiny little girl. Like I said - beyond words. In conclusion, buy this game. Now. Right now. What the hell are you still doing here? Go buy it!

Woke labels

Members can file a published criterion and itemized evidence. Other members +1 or −1 that reason — once. If 10% of members who weighed in file a label, and a reason reaches net +5, that rank keeps the title omitted from the database. Weak labels do not.
